Vanished Streets exhibition catalogue
Vanished Streets exhibition catalogue
Shloimy Alman was born in Manchester in 1950, three years after his Polish Jewish parents arrived in the city as refugees. He remembers with great affection the bustling Jewish quarters of Cheetham Hill, Strangeways and Hightown of his youth.
In 1977 Shloimy photographed the remnants of Jewish life in the streets where he had grown up. His collection of over 300 colour slides taken during this period now remains as a unique record of a disappeared world. Some of these images can be seen in this catalogue, which documents the exhibition held at People's History Museum in 2021.
This catalogue, by writer and oral historian Rachel Lichtenstein, has been made possible with thanks to the Shloimy Alman Archive and the History Research Centre at Manchester Metropolitan University.
