This painting by David Rumsey depicts key scenes and figures from the 1984–1985 Miners’ Strike in Kent and across the UK, alongside Labour leader Keir Hardie. Rumsey began the painting in 1984, shortly after the strike started, completing it in 2012. Living in Herne Bay at the time, he was an active member of the local Miners’ Support Group. Featuring the National Coal Board sign, the Battle of Orgreave, Women Against Pit Closures, international solidarity, miners’ lamps and canaries, the painting captures the struggle, resilience and unity of the movement.
